Is there any wolfberry grown in America?

I have never heard Wolfberry before. What is it?  The Latin name of wolfberry is Lycium barbarum fruit. Chinese name is Gou Qi (Ji) Zi or Gou Qi Berry. It is a common Chinese herb and medicinal food. The wolfberry bush grows in the northwest part of China.  The fruit has been known for promoting visual acuity and general health since ancient times.  People suffering from failing eyesight, diabetes, anemia, tinnitus, and general debility due to consumptive diseases will benefit most from the berry.  It is often used in tonic formulas, teas, and chicken soup.  Many people chew them like raisins because of their pleasant taste.  To Top

What are the main nutrients in wolfberry? There are several important types of  nutrients in wolfberry:

1. Wolfberry signature nutrient is Lycium barbarum Polysaccharides (LBP). Chinese researchers have put much attention on focusing on LBP for past 30 years. There have been 1000 papers related to LBP which might be good source for modulating immunity and anti-oxidant compounds.

2. The carotenoids and zeaxanthin in Rich NatureTM Wolfberry provide essential nutrients for the eyes. Dr. Dietmar Breithaupt and his research team have found that Rich Nature Wolfberry contains alsmost exclusively zeaxanthin dipalmitate (ca. 150mg /100grams). Rich NatureTM Wolfberry also contains between 26,000 and 28,000 IU/100g beta-carotene.

3. Rich NatureTM Wolfberry contains 19 amino acids including all 8 essential amino acids (amino acids which must be obtained from food).  More than half of the amino acids are free or water soluble, and can be directly utilized by the body.

4. Besides the above three main nutrients, wolfberry also has about 20 trace minerals, fiber, protein (about 11%-13%), Betaine, Flavonoids, Vitamins A, B, C, etc.   To Top

Who should take wolfberry? Everyone can take wolfberry on daily basis for general health.  However, people with chronic conditions, such as diabetes, liver problems, kidney problems, eye conditions, or weak joints and legs will likely benefit the most from eating wolfberry, particularly patients undergoing anti-cancer treatment and patients with diabetic retinopathy. Wolfberry is not for treating disease; instead, its main health benefit is to nourish our body.  “Nourish” in Chinese medicine means to support your body whenever it suffers from illness or weakness.  To Top

What kind of eye conditions will wolfberry improve? Chinese medicine uses wolfberry to treat or prevent visual degeneration, such as cataracts, retinopathy, or age related macular degeneration.  One report from the Department of Ophthalmology in the Chinese University of Hong Kong demonstrated that carotenoids in wolfberry had a high affinity for the retina.  “Affinity” means the nutrients in wolfberry showed a high concentration in the retina after ingestion and absorption by the body.  Another study on 44 patients with diabetic retinopathy showed that wolfberry significantly improved conditions that cause retinopathy.  Dr. Iris F. Benzie, MD and her research team at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University have done a single-blinded, placebo-controlled, human study. The study demonstrate a mean post-supplementation level of 0.096µmol/l, a 250 % increase, in fasting plasma zeaxanthin after 4 weeks of supplementation with Rich Nature brand whole wolfberries. Twenty seven people anticipated the study. This study has been published in the British Journal of Nutrition (2005), 93, 123-130.To Top

I heard of that Wolfberry could enhance sexual well-being, is it true? Yes. Chinese Wolfberry Chinese Wolfberry has been shown to facilitate the conversion of human growth hormone (HGH) into insulin growth factor-one (IGF-1). IGF-1 is the hormone responsible for the growth and development of the body's connective tissues. The penis is made of collagen and is surrounded by a layer of fibrous connective tissue. Wolfberry by helping to keep blood glucose levels low promotes the conversion of HGH to IGF-1 in the liver and stimulates the growth of these connective tissue cells. It causes the body's pituitary gland to release human growth hormones, while stimulating the testes and adrenal glands to secrete male sex hormones known as androgens directly into the bloodstream.  In a study of 64 cases, the content LPO in the serum of the patients treated was obviously decreased, the contents of vitamin C and the activities of SOD were markedly increased compared with control group. The difference between two groups was statistic significant (P< 0.001).  To Top

How long do I need to eat wolfberry before I get the benefits? You may take wolfberry everyday and stay with it as long as you wish.  How long it takes before benefits start to show depends on how an individual reacts to wolfberry.  Many Chinese eat wolfberry on a regular basis. Wolfberry really can improve your health in the long run.  Rich Nature produces another product called W-LBP which is specially designed for cancer and diabetic retinopathy patients.  W-LBP capsules are made from concentrated wolfberry powder. Some patients tell us that W-LBP benefits them faster than wolfberry. To Top

If I am allergic to berries, would I also be allergic to wolfberry? There have been no reported cases of allergy in China or in the U.S.  However, to be cautious, you may want to consult to your doctors.  To Top

Is Rich NatureTM Wolfberry  certified organic? Rich NatureTM Wolfberry grows in northwest China, source of the best wolfberry in the world.  China does not have organic certification.  However, China has “Green Food Certification” which is similar in concept to the U.S. organic certification.  The Green Food Standards are used to measure if the foods contain any chemical fertilizer, pesticides, heavy metals, etc. The China Green Food Center issues a certificate for the qualified food after testing it. Rich NatureTM Wolfberry is a certified Green Food.  To ensure the quality, Rich NatureTM Wolfberry has been double checked for heavy metals, pesticides, and microorganisms in an independent laboratory in the U.S. You can check Analysis Report of Rich Nature Wolfberry.   To Top

My Doctor of Chinese Medicine advised me to always look for wolfberry that is undyed and soft like raisins. Rich NatureTM Wolfberry shows high quality, but is the driest I've ever seen. Why is it so? Your doctor is almost right. To increase shelf life, we dry the berries very thoroughly. They will soak up a lot of moisture when they are open to the air for several days. To make wolfberry softer, you can open the container for couple of days in a clean place. Excessive moisture in the berries allows bacteria to grow.   To Top

Rich NatureTM Wolfberry seems bigger and fresher than those I saw in Chinatown. Can you tell me the difference? There are two basic things you should know about wolfberry: grades and quality. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) pharmacists classify wolfberry into four grades according to size: Supreme, First, Second and Third Grades. The Supreme grade has the biggest size and the most nutrients.  The Third grade has the smallest size and the least nutrients. For example, the beta-carotene content in the Supreme grade is twice as high as in the Third grade.  There is a way for TCM pharmacists to determine the grades. Per gram, there are about 5-6 berries for Supreme grade, 8-9 berries for the First grade, 10-11 berries for the Second grade, and 12 or more for the Third grade. Of primary importance is the quality of the berries. The good quality wolfberry has a natural red color and is in good shape.  They do not stick together. Some berries in Chinese stores are bright red in color or are very dark red because they are smoked with sulfur or were not processed and stored well.

Rich NatureTM Wolfberry is the Supreme grade and is naturally dried. It is the most nutrient dense and is well processed and stored.   To Top

I noticed that in the picture on your web site the color of the Wolfberry is red so I’m wondering how the Wolfberries you sell are processed? I am assuming that they are not dried because I have just read on another website that when they are dried they turn black. The wolfberry you have seen on our website is dried berries. We put fresh berries in the heating warehouse at the temperature 98-102 degrees F  to dry the berries after the berries harvest. You have to be very careful the berries turned black. That is not burned but it might be bad quality caused by moisture! Wolfberry are easily absorbing the moisture. The skin of berries turns black and the meat of berries become rotten and the nutrients, of cause, has been damaged. Good quality of berries should have original red color, good shape and not very sticky.    To Top

Do I need to ask for the certificate of analysis when I buy wolfberry from Chinese groceries? Yes, you should.  This is the best way to ensure quality for someone who has little or no knowledge about wolfberry. Rich NatureTM Wolfberry is tested for microorganisms, heavy metals, and nutrients in independent food testing laboratories in the US to confirm the quality after it is received from our farm in China.  For the Certificate of Analysis of Rich NatureTM Wolfberry, please click here: Analysis Report of Rich Nature Wolfberry.    To Top

Is there any wolfberry grown in America? Wolfberry has been grown in China for thousands of years. America did not grow any wolfberries before. However, some American people tried to grow wolfberries in the United States in the past couple of year. Some of them might get some results. But the American berries have not commercialized and nobody has ensured  the nutrients. China has done extensive research on wolfberries including nutrients and clinical trials in the past 30 years. The scientific papers have been published in China, Hong Kong and some Asian countries, even in European countries. Wolfberry is very new for most of American people. To Top
