What is Andrographis paniculata?
Andrographis paniculata (Andrographis paniculata Nee. L) belongs to the Aconthacea family. It is a wild herb that grows in many areas around the southeastern region of China and other Southeast Asian countries. The root and leaves of Andrographis have been widely used to treat infections and other epidemic diseases for thousands of years in Asia1. Andrographis was the ancient “bug fighter” before modern antibiotics were born. The Chinese people boiled roots and leaves of Andrographis and took the herbal soup to relieve symptoms of respiratory tract and lung infection, such as sore throat, cough, fever, etc. The herb was also commonly used to treat diarrhea and urinary tract infections. Other applications of Andrographis include treating skin infections, such as furuncle, carbuncle and eczema1. For external treatment of the skin, ancient Chinese doctors applied fresh Andrographis paste to the infected areas. Chinese folk medical books also described Andrographis as a medicine to treat snakebite.
Scientific data on Andrographis
Andrographis Paniculata is among a few herbs that modern scientists have extensively studied for almost 30 years. Analysis of Andrographis leaves has yielded an assortment of chemical components with pharmacological activities. Four lactones have been found in Andrographis paniculata: Andrographis A (deoxyandrographolide), Andrographis B (Andrographolide), Andrographis C (Neo-andrographolide), and Andrographis D (deoxydidehydroandrographolide)2,6. These are the main active components of Andrographis. Both crude Andrographis and the single active components have been reported to treat dysentery, intestinal infection, mild typhoid fever, respiratory tract infection, pneumonia, tymparitis, pelvic hematoma, skin infections, etc. The effectiveness of the treatment varies depending upon the type of infection. Andrographis is more effective in treating gastrointestinal tract infection, gum infection and respiratory tract infection than other infections. The pharmacological action of Andrographis remains unclear. One study suggests that herb may exert anti-inflammatory effects through stimulating the adrenal glands2. This finding explains the correlation between its anti-infection effects and its anti-pyretic effect.
