Kenmore, Wash. (May 12nd,
1999) the president of Bastyr University, Dr. Joesph
Pizzorno, welcomed faculty, students, staff, and special
guests, to his annual Presidents Reception for Acupuncture and
Oriental Medicine held in the Chapel at Bastyr University's
Kenmore campus. The highlight of this year's reception was a
special ceremony honoring the memory of Dr.
Cui Yueli, former minister of health of China, and
acknowledging his families donation of a valuable collection
of Traditional Chinese Medicine books from Dr. Cui's personal
library. Many of these books were given to Dr. cui by the
authors themselves and contain handwrtten inscriptions making
this collection quite rare and unique. Dr. Xiaoping Zhang,
Daughter of Dr. Cui, represented the
family at the reception. Dr. Pizzorno and Dr.
Nolting (former chair of the Acupuncture and Oriental
Medicine Department at Bastyr, 1991-1997) shared personal
accounts of meeting with Dr. Cui and the current Minister of
Health, Zhang Wenkang, while both were part of a 1996 Bastyr
University delegation to China. Dr. Pizzorno warmly recalled
meeting with Dr. Cui at the Ministry office in Beijing located
at the traditional childhood residence of the last emperor of
China, Pu Yi. Dr. Nolting presented a detailed review of
Dr. Cui's extremely productive and important life. It was made
clear to all in attendance why Dr. Cui is rightly referred to
as the "Father of Modern Traditional Chinese
Medicine".
